Ian Huntley, the convicted murderer of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, died on March 7, 2026, from a blunt head injury sustained during an attack in prison. He was 52 years old at the time of his death.

The attack occurred on February 26, 2026, when Huntley was struck multiple times over the head with a metal bar by another inmate in a workshop at HMP Frankland. According to prison officials, Huntley was put on life support following the assault but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

Bradley King, a spokesperson for the prison, stated, “I understand the circumstances to be that Mr. Huntley was struck over the head multiple times by another prisoner with an object described as a metal bar.” Huntley was born on January 31, 1974, in Grimsby and had been serving a life sentence for the murders of the two ten-year-old girls, which he committed in 2002.

Huntley was convicted in 2003 and sentenced to life with a minimum term of 40 years. His heinous crimes shocked the nation and led to a massive police investigation involving over 400 officers. The search for Wells and Chapman lasted 13 days before their bodies were discovered.

In the aftermath of his conviction, Huntley’s then-girlfriend, Maxine Carr, was jailed for 21 months for perverting the course of justice. The case remains a painful memory for the families of the victims.

Following Huntley’s death, Anthony Russell, the inmate charged with his murder, is scheduled to appear at Newcastle crown court on April 24 for a pre-trial preparation hearing. Observers expect further developments as the legal proceedings unfold.

Huntley’s body was formally identified on the day he died, and a postmortem examination was conducted by Dr. Jennifer Bolton. His ashes are set to be scattered privately by his family.

Leslie Chapman, the father of victim Jessica, expressed his feelings about Huntley’s death, stating, “I think he was a timebomb waiting to go off, and both our girls were in the wrong place at the wrong time.” Meanwhile, Samantha Bryan, a relative of one of the victims, shared her relief, saying, “I felt relieved. I didn’t cry. I smiled. I was over the moon to be honest.”
