Islam Makhachev secured a commanding victory over Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 in Philadelphia, successfully defending his welterweight title. The win marked Makhachev’s 17th successive UFC victory, establishing a new record and surpassing Anderson Silva’s previous record.
The fight, held at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Pennsylvania, concluded with a unanimous decision in favour of Makhachev. This outcome ended Machado Garry’s ambition to become the first Irish champion in the UFC since Conor McGregor.
Makhachev’s Dominance and Machado Garry’s Resilience
Makhachev, a former lightweight world champion, now boasts a record of 29 wins and one defeat. Machado Garry, aged 28, experienced the second loss of his 19-fight career. Despite the outcome, Makhachev expressed respect for his opponent, stating that Machado Garry gave him a challenging fight.
The bout was characterised as a classic encounter between a grappler and a striker, with Makhachev’s wrestling prowess being a key factor in his dominant performance. During his walkout, Machado Garry displayed confidence, greeting his wife and draping an Ireland flag around himself before entering the octagon.
Makhachev was met with enthusiastic cheers upon his entrance and quickly asserted control in the first round, achieving a takedown on his initial attempt. Although the Irishman defended effectively on the ground, Makhachev maintained control for the remainder of the round, pinning his challenger against the cage.
The second round saw Makhachev’s dominance continue as he knocked Machado Garry down with a head kick before taking him to the canvas. Machado Garry managed to survive the round and found some success with kicks later in the fight, but Makhachev consistently regained control during grappling exchanges.
Towards the end of the fight, Machado Garry managed to land some punches in the clinch, causing Makhachev’s face to bleed. However, the Russian fighter endured, reaching the final bell with superior statistics, including seven unanswered takedowns and over 12 minutes of control time, compared to Machado Garry’s 34 seconds.
Despite Machado Garry landing 29 significant strikes to Makhachev’s 22, the judges were not swayed. Following the fight, the two embraced in a show of mutual respect, with Machado Garry raising Makhachev’s arm in acknowledgment of his victory.
Machado Garry addressed his fans, expressing regret for not securing the win but affirming his pride in his journey and origins. At 28, he has considerable time to pursue his goal of becoming a UFC champion. Makhachev’s victory further strengthens arguments that he is approaching recognition as one of the greatest UFC fighters of all time.
Co-Main Event and Upcoming Bouts
In the co-main event of UFC 330, Mackenzie Dern successfully defended her strawweight title against Gillian Robertson. Dern, aged 33, won by unanimous decision, primarily through her grappling exchanges, securing her fourth consecutive victory. She came close to finishing Robertson, aged 31, multiple times and faced minimal threats throughout the contest.
Dern commented on her improved wrestling, noting that she had been taken down frequently in her first title win. Other announcements included Australia’s Alexander Volkanovski defending his featherweight title against Russia’s Movsar Evloev at UFC 333 in Abu Dhabi on 24 October. Additionally, Russia’s Petr Yan will defend his bantamweight belt in a rematch against Georgian former champion Merab Dvalishvili.
The card also featured England’s Lone’er Kavanagh facing Uzbekistan’s Ramazan Tamirov in a flyweight contest, and English featherweight Arnold Allen competing against American Aaron Pico.
