Arsenal secures Community Shield with commanding performance
Arsenal began the 2026/27 season with a decisive victory in the Community Shield, defeating Manchester City 3-0 in Cardiff. Goals from Riccardo Calafiori, Kai Havertz, and Martin Odegaard secured the trophy for the Gunners. This marks Arsenal’s second piece of silverware in four months and their 18th Community Shield title overall.
The match saw Arsenal take an early lead, with Calafiori scoring just 24 seconds into the game after a pass from Myles Lewis-Skelly. Havertz then doubled their advantage before the half-hour mark, heading the ball in. Odegaard sealed the victory three minutes into the second half, wrong-footing City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to find the net.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed some surprise at his team’s convincing display, noting their impressive manner of play. In contrast, new City manager Enzo Maresca, who took over from Pep Guardiola this summer, downplayed the result, stating it was “just the beginning” despite the defeat.
City’s challenging start and Arsenal’s depth
The performance highlighted a significant gap between the two sides on the day. Arsenal created 2.19 expected goals (xG) compared to City’s 0.77, with none of Arsenal’s xG coming from set-pieces. This was Arsenal’s largest victory to nil against Manchester City since August 2014, also a 3-0 Community Shield win, and City’s heaviest defeat to nil against an English side since a 4-0 loss in November 2024 against Tottenham.
Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown commented on the “stunning” gap, noting Arsenal’s intent and City’s lifeless appearance. Former Scotland striker Ally McCoist also described it as “a bit of a schooling” for Manchester City, raising concerns despite it being early in the season.
Manchester City’s summer transfer activity has seen significant changes. While they swiftly agreed a £116m deal for England midfielder Elliot Anderson, they have not made other first-team signings. Key players like Bernardo Silva and John Stones departed on free transfers, and Manuel Akanji, Nathan Ake, and James Trafford were sold. Additionally, Rodri is reportedly heading to Barcelona in a £65m deal, with Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez considered a potential replacement.

Arsenal, on the other hand, have strengthened their squad by signing first-team players Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis, and making last season’s loanee Piero Hincapie a permanent acquisition. Fringe players Leandro Trossard, Jakub Kiwior, and Christian Norgaard were sold. Guimaraes looked comfortable in midfield during his debut, while Tzolis shone with two assists, playing a role in all three goals.
League implications and managerial stability
The result has led to discussions about the upcoming Premier League season. Arsenal’s stability, with Arteta remaining as manager, contrasts with several of their rivals. Liverpool, under new manager Andoni Iraola, and Chelsea, led by Xabi Alonso, also have new managers this summer. Manchester United’s Michael Carrick and Tottenham’s Roberto de Zerbi were appointed partway through last season.
Sports data analysts at Opta have positioned Arsenal as favourites for the Premier League, giving Arteta’s side a 38% chance of winning the trophy. If successful, it would be Arsenal’s first top-flight title defence since the 1934-35 season.
Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin suggested that Arsenal are favourites for the Premier League, noting their consistent build-up over several years. He also acknowledged that Liverpool and Manchester City should not be written off, but Arsenal appears to be a “wee distance ahead” at this stage. Arsenal will begin their Premier League title defence at home against Coventry in Friday’s curtain-raiser.
