Celebrating Reading on World Book Day
“World Book Day is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate reading at your local library,” said Councillor Ian Cresswell, highlighting the importance of this annual event.
Scheduled for March 5, 2026, World Book Day will see Radio 2 presenters dress up as their favourite literary heroes, adding a festive flair to the occasion. The day aims to inspire a love of reading and spark imagination for children of all ages.
In a significant initiative, the Premier League will distribute over 120,000 free books to children across England and Wales. This effort is part of the Premier League Primary Stars programme, which has gifted more than 460,000 free books to young people since its inception in 2017.
Jim Sells, a representative of the Premier League, remarked, “Having the opportunity to choose a book of their own can inspire a lifelong love of reading.” This sentiment underscores the goal of World Book Day to encourage children to engage with literature.
Local libraries are also getting involved in the celebrations. Worcestershire County Council’s libraries will host various World Book Day themed activities, providing children with opportunities to explore new books and participate in fun events.
St John’s Library will serve as an official voucher exchange hub for World Book Day, allowing children to redeem vouchers for free books. Additionally, Malvern Library will host a ‘Meet the Author’ event with Daisy Merle on March 4, offering young readers a chance to connect with a published author.
On March 5, Redditch & Woodrow Libraries will run a free Storytime and craft session, further engaging children in the joy of reading and creativity. These activities reflect the community’s commitment to fostering a love of literature among young people.
As World Book Day approaches, these initiatives are set to create a vibrant atmosphere around reading, encouraging children to explore the world of books.
With various events planned, the excitement surrounding World Book Day 2026 continues to build, promising a day filled with literary celebration.
