The wider picture
Easter weekend usually signifies the start of warmer and sunnier weather in the United Kingdom. However, this year, the forecast suggests a significant shift in conditions, with wet and windy weather expected to dominate the holiday period.
As we approach Good Friday on April 3, 2026, meteorologists are predicting that conditions will turn more unsettled. Heavy bands of rain are forecast to move southward from Friday morning and persist throughout the weekend. Steven Keates, a meteorologist, noted, “As we head into Good Friday and Easter Saturday, the weather is expected to turn more unsettled, with spells of rain at times, some of which could be heavy.” This change in weather patterns is attributed to low-pressure systems moving in from the northwest.
Temperatures are expected to drop significantly, particularly in Scotland, where they could reach as low as 1°C on Saturday morning. In contrast, parts of the south and southeast of England may see highs of 14°C on the same day. Such a broad northwest to southeast split in weather conditions is likely to characterize the Easter weekend.
On Easter Sunday, the forecast indicates cloudy skies with chances of drizzle and highs around 13°C. Observers expect that Easter Monday may offer a respite from the wet weather, with more breakthroughs of sunshine throughout the day, also reaching highs of 13°C. As noted by meteorologists, “However, Easter Monday is appearing to be the more promising day of the long bank holiday weekend with more breakthroughs of sunshine throughout the day.”
Windy conditions are also anticipated across the UK, particularly in exposed northwestern locations. Keates added, “It is also likely to become windy at times across all areas, particularly in exposed northwestern locations.” The combination of rain and wind may affect outdoor plans for many families looking to celebrate the holiday.
As the forecast stands, there is a 40% chance of rain on Good Friday, which may prompt many to reconsider their outdoor activities. This shift in weather is a stark contrast to the warmer temperatures experienced in the days leading up to Easter, where highs of 16°C were recorded in the south.
While the forecast provides a clearer picture of the expected weather, details remain unconfirmed, and conditions may change as the date approaches. Residents and visitors are advised to stay updated on the latest weather reports as Easter weekend nears.
