The National Trust’s Puffin Cam is back for its second season, providing a unique live view of seabird antics on the Farne Islands. This comes as the region grapples with the impacts of recent bird flu outbreaks and extreme weather conditions.

Laura Knowles from the National Trust remarked, “The breeding season is always a special time of year as our ranger teams gear up to monitor the birds daily over the spring and summer months.” This monitoring is crucial as it helps track the health and population of around 200,000 seabirds, including puffins, guillemots, and Arctic terns, that call these islands home.

That context matters because in 2022 and 2023, bird flu devastated local populations, with over 6,000 dead birds recorded in 2022 alone. In 2023, this number dropped slightly to over 3,500, but officials remain concerned about the long-term effects. Sophia Jackson highlighted this concern: “We’ve been closely monitoring the impact of bird flu as part of international research into the disease.”

The situation has been compounded by severe storms—Goretti, Ingrid, and Chandra—which caused significant damage to wildlife along the Atlantic coast. As Knowles pointed out regarding the Puffin Cam, “Puffin Cam is a simple but powerful way to share the magic of Farne Islands wildlife with everyone, wherever they are.” The live stream attracted over 250,000 views last year.

Rangers will conduct bird counts next month to assess how these factors have affected seabird populations. The breeding season is monitored daily during spring and summer months. Visitor boats have also reopened for the season on the Farne Islands, allowing tourists to experience this wildlife haven firsthand.

Yet uncertainties linger—Ben McCarthy stated, “We don’t yet know what this means for the puffin and other seabirds which are returning to breed on the Farnes this year.” The National Trust plans to take Puffin Cam on a UK tour as part of its Window to the Wild project, aiming to raise awareness for wildlife conservation efforts.

The next annual seabird counts will be completed in June. These will provide valuable insights into current populations and their health following recent challenges.
