Sanju Samson Leads India to T20 World Cup Victory
“It feels like a dream. Very happy, very grateful. Out of words, out of emotions, it’s a bit surreal,” said Sanju Samson after his remarkable performance in the T20 World Cup final held in Ahmedabad, India, on March 8, 2026. His innings of 89 runs off just 46 balls was instrumental in securing India’s victory over New Zealand by 96 runs.
India scored a total of 255 runs in the final, showcasing a dominant batting display. This victory marks a significant achievement as India became the first men’s team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title, adding to their recent successes in major men’s white-ball competitions.
Jasprit Bumrah, who also played a crucial role in the final, took four wickets for just 15 runs. He expressed his sentiments, stating, “It feels special because I played one final at my home venue [against Australia in 2023] and couldn’t win that one.” His performance, along with Samson’s batting, was key to India’s triumph.
Throughout the tournament, Samson had been in constant touch with cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar for advice, which he credited for his performance. “What more can I ask for? This is very big for me. I need to enjoy it for now and then figure out what next to do,” he remarked, reflecting on the significance of the win.
With this victory, India has now won three major men’s white-ball competitions consecutively, further solidifying their status in international cricket. New Zealand, on the other hand, faced disappointment once again, having lost four World Cup finals since 2015.
The final match attracted an impressive crowd of 100,000 spectators, highlighting the popularity and excitement surrounding the event. As the celebrations continue, fans and players alike are eager to see what the future holds for this talented Indian team.
