Excitement Builds for Radio 1 Big Weekend 2026
“Olivia Dean will headline the Sunday, after recently winning four Brit Awards,” stated Greg James, highlighting the significance of the upcoming event. The Radio 1 Big Weekend 2026 is set to take place from May 22 to May 24 at Herrington Country Park in Sunderland, promising an exciting lineup for music fans.
This festival marks a return to Sunderland, which last hosted the Big Weekend in 2005. Over 100,000 music enthusiasts are expected to attend, eager to see performances from a diverse array of artists, including Fatboy Slim, who will headline the Friday lineup, and Zara Larsson, Louis Tomlinson, and Lola Young, who are among the acts scheduled for Saturday.
The festival aims to bring major live music events to towns and cities that do not typically host them, with a focus on community engagement. “The Big Weekend tours towns and cities in the UK, aiming for those that don’t have major live music events,” the organizers noted. This initiative is designed to foster local pride and provide residents with access to high-profile performances.
Tickets for the event will go on sale at 5pm on March 11, 2026, with General Admission priced at £44.50 and VIP tickets at £86. Notably, 30% of tickets will be reserved for local residents in Sunderland, ensuring that the community has the opportunity to participate in this significant event. “Tickets will be geographically weighted with an element of preference given to local residents,” the organizers confirmed.
Each day of the festival will feature a limited number of tickets available, with 31,000 general admission tickets and 2,960 VIP tickets allocated per day. Given the popularity of the festival, it is expected that tickets will sell out quickly, as has been the trend in previous years. “The festival often sells out within minutes every year,” organizers remarked.
BBC Radio 1 will broadcast live from the festival site across the weekend, providing fans who cannot attend in person with the opportunity to experience the performances. The Big Weekend has garnered recognition, winning The Green Award at the UK Festival Awards 2025, which underscores its commitment to sustainability and community involvement.
As the festival approaches, anticipation continues to grow among fans and artists alike. With a lineup that includes notable performers such as Dermot Kennedy, Kehlani, and Jorja Smith, Radio 1 Big Weekend 2026 is poised to be a memorable celebration of music and community in Sunderland.
