Lambeth Council is set to celebrate the borough’s vibrant Portuguese-speaking community with a special event on June 13, 2026. This occasion coincides with the Day of Portugal, which is observed annually on June 10. The festivities will run from 6 PM to 10 PM, featuring an array of music and dance performances that showcase the rich cultural heritage of the community.
The event is made possible through funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, emphasizing the importance of local initiatives that support cultural diversity. Little Portugal, a neighborhood in Lambeth, is known for housing one of the largest Portuguese-speaking populations in the UK, making this celebration particularly significant for residents and visitors alike.
Cllr Marcia Cameron expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “Our Portuguese-speaking businesses are an essential part of Lambeth’s unique character.” This sentiment reflects the integral role that the Portuguese community plays in the borough’s identity and economic landscape.
In addition to the local celebrations, the Scotland Under-21 team is scheduled to face Portugal in Estoril on March 31, 2026, as part of the UEFA Under-21 Championship Qualifying. This match adds an exciting layer to the cultural exchanges between the two nations, highlighting the ongoing connections fostered through sports.
Meanwhile, Portugal is also addressing housing challenges with a newly unveiled tax package aimed at increasing housing supply and moderating rent leasing. The measures include a reduced VAT rate of 6% for construction works related to properties designated for moderate rent, defined as a monthly rent not exceeding €2,300.
Furthermore, the initiative sets a maximum property acquisition value of €660,982 for moderate price housing. However, for non-resident investors acquiring urban properties not intended for moderate rent, the real estate transfer tax rate will increase to 7.5%. These changes are part of Portugal’s broader strategy to enhance housing accessibility for its residents.
Cllr Diogo Costa remarked, “I am very pleased to see the active role that Lambeth Council is playing in bringing the Day of Portugal celebrations back to the borough.” This reflects a commitment to honoring cultural heritage while also addressing contemporary issues such as housing.
As the event approaches, observers are keen to see how the celebrations will unfold and what further initiatives may arise from these cultural engagements. Details remain unconfirmed regarding additional activities or partnerships that may be announced leading up to the event.
