The numbers
Mr Benn, the beloved character who first graced the pages of children’s literature in 1967, is being adapted into a live-action film by director Kirk Jones. This adaptation aims to introduce Mr Benn to a new generation, with filming expected to begin in early 2027.
Kirk Jones, known for his work on films like Nanny McPhee and Waking Ned Devine, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I adored Mr Benn as a child and immediately saw the importance of introducing him to a new generation, in a live action adventure.” The film will bring to life the character’s unique ability to travel through time and space, visiting various historical and futuristic worlds to solve significant problems with kindness, compassion, and common sense.
Mr Benn was originally created by author David McKee, who published four books featuring the character: Red Knight, Gladiator, Pirate, and Zoo Keeper. Following the success of the books, an animated series aired on the BBC from 1971 to 1972, producing only 13 episodes. The series captivated audiences with its charming storytelling and moral lessons.
In 2001, McKee added a fifth book to the Mr Benn series, further expanding the character’s adventures. Sadly, David McKee passed away in 2022, but his family has expressed excitement about the film adaptation, noting, “The Mr Benn film project has been close to our hearts for many years; it was something our father would often talk about and was keen to see it happen.”
The stories of Mr Benn often contain moral lessons for children, making them not only entertaining but also educational. The upcoming film is expected to retain this essence, ensuring that the character’s adventures resonate with both new and existing fans.
As the project develops, observers are keen to see how the film will translate the charm of the original stories into a live-action format. Kirk Jones hinted at the potential impact of the film, saying, “If all goes to plan, Mr Benn might even save the world.” Details remain unconfirmed, but the anticipation surrounding this adaptation continues to grow.
With the legacy of Mr Benn firmly established in children’s literature and animation, the live-action film adaptation represents a significant step in bringing this iconic character back into the spotlight. Fans are eager to see how the timeless adventures of Mr Benn will unfold on the big screen, as the project aims to bridge the gap between generations and introduce the character to a whole new audience.
