Kyle Walker announces retirement

“I am sad to be making this decision, but I’m also very proud of what I’ve achieved with England,” said Kyle Walker as he announced his retirement from international football.

Walker, who earned 96 caps for the England national team, played in five major tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO events. His final appearance came in a friendly match against Senegal in June 2025.

Beginning his international career in 2009 with the MU19s, Walker made his senior debut for England against Spain in November 2011. Over the years, he became a key player, contributing to the team’s success in reaching the UEFA EURO finals in both 2021 and 2024.

Reflecting on his journey, Walker remarked, “The book is now closed and it’s been a whirlwind of a journey, but one that I’ve really, really enjoyed.” He also expressed gratitude to various managers, including Fabio Capello, Roy Hodgson, Gareth Southgate, and Thomas Tuchel, who played significant roles in his career.

During his time with the national team, Walker scored his only international goal against Ukraine in September 2023. He was also named player of the match in his first start against Sweden in 2011, marking the beginning of a distinguished international career.

At the age of 35, Walker’s retirement marks the end of an era for the England team. He served as vice-captain during the UEFA EURO 2024, demonstrating his leadership on and off the pitch.

“To represent your country once, let alone 96 times, I’m extremely proud of that,” Walker added, highlighting the significance of his contributions to the national team.

Thomas Tuchel, who praised Walker’s achievements, stated, “I know all England fans will join me in congratulating Kyle on an incredible international career.” As Walker steps away from international duties, his legacy within the England team will undoubtedly be remembered.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding any future endeavors for Walker post-retirement, but his impact on English football is undeniable.
