“I’m absolutely delighted to be joining Torquay United. This is a football club with a big history, a big heart and a proud legacy, and one that means so much to its area and its supporters,” said Jimmy Ball following his appointment as the First Team Manager of Torquay United AFC.

Ball, the son of 1966 World Cup winner Alan Ball, takes over the managerial role after Paul Wotton was sacked following a run of five winless games. The Board of Torquay United was unanimous in their decision to appoint Ball, who previously managed AFC Totton, leading them to two promotions in three seasons.

Torquay United currently sits fifth in the National League South after 38 games, a position that reflects both the potential and challenges the team faces. Ball expressed excitement about the squad’s potential, indicating a strong belief in their capabilities.

Mark Bowes-Cavanagh, Co-Chairman of Torquay United, stated, “We believe Jimmy is a very strong fit for this football club and we are delighted to welcome him to Torquay United.” This endorsement highlights the confidence the club has in Ball’s ability to steer them towards success.

Prior to his tenure at AFC Totton, Ball held coaching roles at Forest Green Rovers, Stevenage, Portsmouth, and Stoke City, which have equipped him with valuable experience in football management.

His first match in charge will be against Dagenham & Redbridge, a crucial encounter that could set the tone for his tenure at the club. Fans and players alike are hopeful that Ball’s leadership will bring a renewed sense of purpose and direction.

Kevin Hebenton, from AFC Totton, remarked on Ball’s departure, saying, “His achievements will forever be recorded in the history of AFC Totton, and the club will always be grateful for the energy, dedication, and passion he brought in helping lead us to the highest league position in our 140-year history.”

As Ball steps into this pivotal role, he carries with him the legacy of his father and the expectations of a club eager to reclaim its former glory.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding any immediate changes to the coaching staff or player lineup under Ball’s management.
