Frankenstein, directed by Guillermo del Toro, is a retelling of Mary Shelley’s genre-defining novel. The film had its world premiere at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival in 2025 and has since garnered significant acclaim.

At the 98th Academy Awards, Frankenstein won three Oscars for Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling, out of nine nominations. Despite its accolades, the film faced stiff competition, with Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another winning both Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Guillermo del Toro expressed pride in the collaborative effort behind Frankenstein, stating, “This film required hundreds of people and we poured ourselves into this…” His vision for the film was to explore deep themes of humanity, love, and understanding, as he described Frankenstein as “an epic drama about what it means to be human, to crave love, and seek understanding.”

Jacob Elordi, who played a significant role in the film, dedicated an impressive 400 hours in the makeup chair to transform into his character. This commitment highlights the film’s dedication to its technical achievements, which were acknowledged during the awards ceremony.

Frankenstein was partly filmed in Scotland, with locations including Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen, adding to the film’s atmospheric depth. The film’s artistic direction was led by Kate Hawley, who remarked, “The win was basically his, too,” referring to the collaborative nature of the project.
