Rangers’ European Campaign Shift
Rangers have exited the Europa League qualifiers following a 3-2 aggregate defeat to Jagiellonia Białystok. The Scottish side drew 1-1 at Ibrox in the second leg, a result that means manager Derek McInnes is still awaiting his first win after four competitive matches in charge.
The tie had offered initial optimism for Rangers when captain Lawrence Shankland scored a penalty in the 19th minute, levelling the aggregate score at 2-2. This goal came after Rangers had lost 2-1 in the first leg played in Poland.
However, Jagiellonia Białystok equalised in the 65th minute through attacker Nik Prelec. This goal proved decisive, as the home side struggled to regain control of the game despite various changes in formation and personnel. The match concluded with boos from the fans at Ibrox, expressing frustration with the team’s start to the season.

Lawrence Shankland’s goal was his first for Rangers, coming from a penalty awarded after VAR spotted a handball by former Celtic centre-half Yuki Kobayashi. Daisuke Yokota’s low cutback into the six-yard box led to the incident.
Before Rangers took the lead, Jagiellonia Białystok had shown their attacking intent. Jesus Imaz hit a low 20-yard shot off the inside of a post and across the face of goal. Following their exit from the Europa League, Rangers will now compete in the Conference League play-off round, where they are set to face Czech team Jablonec. This shift in competition marks a change in their European campaign for the season.
Elsewhere in European competition, Hearts also dropped out of the Europa League despite a 1-1 draw with Benfica. Tómas Magnússon scored for Hearts in the 77th minute, but Dodi Lukébakio equalised for Benfica less than a minute later. Benfica had previously secured a 6-1 victory in the first leg, resulting in a 7-2 aggregate triumph. Hearts will now face Rapid Vienna of Austria in the Conference League play-offs.
Hibernian, another Scottish club, secured a place in the Conference League play-off round by defeating Shkendija 2-1 on aggregate. They played out a 0-0 draw in the second leg at the Todor Proeski National Arena in challenging conditions. Hibernian manager David Gray praised his players for their performance, highlighting their first clean sheet of the season against a strong opponent. Hibernian will now face Belgian side Gent in their play-off fixture.
The results mean that while Rangers and Hearts transition to the Conference League, Hibernian continues their European journey in the same competition, with all three Scottish clubs aiming to extend their involvement in European football.
