Borderlands 4 quickly lost 96% of its player count within two months of launch despite largely positive critic reviews. This decline raised concerns among players and developers alike, prompting Gearbox to take action.

Recent updates have shown that Borderlands 4’s PC performance has significantly improved since its launch in Fall 2025. According to Gearbox, the average frames per second (FPS) has jumped by roughly 20% between Version 1.0.2 and Version 1.5.

For players running the game at minimum specifications, average framerates have climbed from 37.32 to 52.79 FPS. This improvement is particularly notable for those using high-end graphics cards. For instance, on an RTX 4090, average framerates increased from 54.96 FPS to 78.43 FPS.

In addition to enhanced performance, game stability has also seen a marked improvement. Game crashes have fallen to just 0.38% of all sessions, which is half of what it was in December. The proportion of players experiencing crashes dropped from 17% to 9.35%.

Developers have reworked the appearance of low-detail meshes, ensuring that players do not notice any changes while exploring the game’s expansive environments, such as Kairos. This commitment to quality has been welcomed by the community.

As one player noted, “Borderlands 4 is in a different place than when it came out, and that’s for the best for PC players.” This sentiment reflects the positive reception of the recent updates.

Gearbox has indicated that they are committed to making further refinements while maintaining players’ ability to adjust their gaming experience according to personal preferences. Observers expect that continued updates will further enhance the game’s performance and stability.

While the improvements are promising, details remain unconfirmed regarding future updates and their potential impact on player retention.
