Central line delays impact London commuters
The Central line is experiencing severe delays across its entire route due to a signal failure at Bethnal Green. Passengers are being advised to check travel updates and allow extra time for their journeys as multiple Tube lines are affected.
In addition to the Central line, the Bakerloo line is facing minor delays due to train cancellations, while the Northern line is running with minor delays following an earlier signal failure at Kennington. The Piccadilly line is heavily disrupted after a late finish to engineering work, resulting in severe delays between Acton Town and Heathrow Airport.
As a result of the ongoing delays, tickets are being accepted on London Buses and the Elizabeth line, providing some relief for affected commuters. The situation has prompted Transport for London to urge passengers to remain informed about their travel options.
The delays come amid a backdrop of industrial action, as Tube drivers are set to strike on March 24, 26, April 21, 23, and May 19, 21 over a dispute regarding working hours. The Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT), which has around 1,800 members involved in the dispute, has rejected proposals for a compressed four-day working week, citing concerns about fatigue and safety.
Eddie Dempsey, RMT general secretary, stated, “London Underground is trying to force through major changes to working patterns that have already been rejected by our members.” Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Transport for London described the threatened strikes as “completely unnecessary” and warned of their potential serious impact on London’s businesses and commuters.
As the situation develops, commuters are advised to stay updated on the status of their journeys and the ongoing negotiations between the RMT and Transport for London. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the resolution of the signal failure and the potential for further disruptions in the coming days.
