Upcoming e-ID Launch in Sweden

As Sweden prepares for significant advancements in digital identity, the government is set to launch its electronic identity (e-ID) on December 1, 2026. This new system will provide a government alternative to the widely used BankID, which currently boasts over 8.7 million users and a penetration rate of 99.7 percent.

The e-ID aims to enhance user experience by allowing individuals to identify themselves, share information, and provide e-signatures. It will also enable access to digital services across other EU countries, ensuring a higher trust level in accordance with EU regulations.

Work on the e-ID project began last year, and the Police Authority has received a budget of 40 million Swedish kronor to facilitate its development. However, the exact implications of the e-ID launch on existing digital identity services in Sweden remain unclear.

Public Holiday in Bangladesh

In a related development, the government of Bangladesh has declared March 18, 2026, a public holiday. This date falls between the pre-scheduled holidays for Shab-e-Qadr and Eid-ul-Fitr, marking an important period for many in the country.

During this public holiday, essential services will remain operational, ensuring that the needs of the population are met. Additionally, the stock of subsidized fuel is guaranteed to be safe until Eid 2026, with prices remaining stable in the lead-up to the holiday.

Bahlil Lahadalia, a government official, has urged the public not to engage in panic buying, emphasizing the stability of fuel supplies. This announcement comes as the country prepares for the festive celebrations associated with Eid.

As both Sweden and Bangladesh approach these significant dates, the developments surrounding the e-ID launch and the public holiday highlight the evolving landscape of digital identity and cultural observances in 2026.
