Jack Colback Announces Retirement

Jack Colback has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 36. The former midfielder concluded a notable career that saw him make 480 professional club appearances.

Colback’s career included significant stints at several clubs, most notably Sunderland, Newcastle United, and Nottingham Forest. He made 135 appearances for Sunderland and 102 for Newcastle United, showcasing his versatility and commitment on the pitch.

Throughout his career, Colback played in 189 Premier League matches, scoring 9 goals and providing 11 assists. His contributions were instrumental in key moments, including being part of the Sunderland squad that reached the Carabao Cup final in the 2013-14 season.

In 2016-17, Colback was part of the Newcastle United team that won the Championship title, a highlight in his career. He joined Nottingham Forest initially on loan before making a permanent transfer in 2020, further solidifying his reputation in the league.

After a brief spell at Nottingham Forest, Colback joined Queens Park Rangers in the summer of 2023, where he made 53 appearances. Reflecting on his career, Colback expressed gratitude for the opportunities he had, stating, “Today, I’m announcing my retirement from professional football. I feel privileged to have the honour of playing nearly 500 matches at the top level, representing some of the biggest clubs in the country in Newcastle, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, Ipswich and Queen’s Park Rangers.”

He continued, “There have been highs, lows, promotions, tough defeats, and moments I’ll never forget. I would like to thank all of my coaches, teammates and supporters who helped me to achieve my dream. Looking forward to what the next chapter holds.”

Colback began his career with Sunderland, where he had a pair of loan spells with Ipswich Town before completing a free transfer to Newcastle United in 2014 after leaving Sunderland.
