Empowering Women Through Leadership
“It’s a fantastic job for women my age,” said June Robertson, a bus driver who has been a part of the profession since 1987. Her words resonate deeply as International Women’s Day 2026 unfolds, celebrating the strides made by women across various sectors, particularly in traditionally male-dominated fields like transportation.
Robertson returned to her role as a Lothian driver in 2024, highlighting the evolving landscape for women in the bus industry. She emphasizes the importance of visibility, stating, “The more women drivers we have, the more visible we’ll be and hopefully that’ll result in more women joining us themselves.” This sentiment reflects a broader movement towards encouraging women to pursue careers in fields where they have been historically underrepresented.
Recognition of Achievements
The 2026 International Women’s Day Recognition Awards, announced by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) on March 8, 2026, celebrated outstanding contributions to women’s leadership. Lucha Villar Galvez was honored for her leadership, having dedicated 30 years to the Paralympic Movement. Villar Galvez expressed her gratitude, stating, “I’m honoured to receive the 2026 IPC International Women’s Day Recognition award.” Her work has been pivotal in promoting inclusivity and equality in sports.
Shakhnoza Mirziyoyeva was also recognized for her emerging leadership, sharing her pride in being part of a movement that uses sport to create real opportunities and drive meaningful progress. “I am proud to be part of a movement where sport creates real opportunities and drives meaningful progress,” she remarked, underscoring the transformative power of sports in advancing gender equality.
Advancing Women’s Representation in Sports
World Para Ice Hockey received recognition as an IPC Member for its efforts in promoting equality and inclusion of women in sport. The organization’s commitment is evident in the increase of female representation in Para ice hockey, which rose from just 1% in 2021 to 20% in 2025. This growth reflects a significant shift towards inclusivity and the empowerment of women in sports.
In a related initiative, Rangers Football Club supported the #GiveToGain campaign for International Women’s Day 2026. This campaign encourages the support and upliftment of women through resources, opportunities, and advocacy. Four academy players from Rangers took on key roles during a matchday, showcasing leadership and inspiring ambition among their peers.
Looking Ahead
As International Women’s Day 2026 comes to a close, the achievements celebrated serve as a reminder of the ongoing efforts needed to promote gender equality. The stories of women like June Robertson, Lucha Villar Galvez, and Shakhnoza Mirziyoyeva highlight the progress made and the work still to be done. Their contributions not only inspire future generations but also pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable society.
