Plans for a new sea wall on the Isle of Man, which were expected to provide “crucial” flood defense, have been put on hold due to worries about the potential loss of numerous parking spaces.
Community Concerns Over Sea Wall
The Department of Infrastructure (DoI) expressed that “significant concerns” from the community regarding the wall’s height and the reduction of parking spaces along West Quay in Ramsey led to the withdrawal of the plans.
The proposal aimed to establish a 4.26ft (1.3m) tall structure, incorporating pathways for pedestrians and cyclists in Ramsey Port, which would safeguard 400 properties from flooding. However, it would result in the loss of 52 parking spaces along the quayside, according to the Department of Infrastructure.
Concerns regarding the loss of parking spaces have previously derailed similar initiatives, leading to the cancellation of a 2022 proposal.

In light of the challenges faced, the Department of Interior announced plans to begin discussions on a revised strategy, collaborating with Ramsey Town Commissioners to harmonize "efficient flood management" with the city's "requirements and identity".

Infrastructure minister Tim Crookall MHK stated: "Our commitment to safeguarding homes and businesses in Ramsey from flooding remains unwavering; however, there are significant concerns regarding the proposed height of the wall and the potential loss of parking spaces."
"It is evident that the existing design, although providing crucial flood defense for the town, is not the appropriate choice for West Quay."
The DoI had earlier asserted that recent research indicates Ramsey possessed "adequate capacity" to handle the removal of parking spaces, thanks to "enhanced signage and enforcement".
